At Space Works Consulting we were very excited to hear of the recent approval by Brighton and Hove City Council of Brighton Housing Trust and QED developers' plans for new transitional homes for the homeless. Made out of shipping containers!
This is not the first time we have come across an ingenious use for these industrial beasts, and at least two episodes of George Clarke's Amazing Spaces last year features containers being used in weird and wacky ways. My favourite was the live/work space Container City in London's Trinity Buoy Wharf.

What BHT and QED are hoping to do in Brighton is to provide 36 men and women in Brighton with a self-contained (no pun intended!) studio flat, on land part of the New England Quarter development. When that land needs reclaiming for the continued development, the containers will be moved to another underused piece of land in the city.
This proposal is attempting to solve a housing crisis in Brighton. More than that, however, it is attempting to set a new precedent for imaginative, stylish, well-designed housing that the new owners will be proud of, as well a feeling safe and secure. And as housing is such an important part of self-identity and self-respect, we are really delighted to see schemes likes this being given the go-ahead!
Have a good week,
